Care after tooth removal
Many times a tooth needs
to be removed if it is completely decayed, loose or not in a condition to be
saved. Proper care is needed after tooth removal so that the extraction site
heals fast and properly and to avoid complications.
Here are some most important
tips which should be followed to avoid complications and promote healing.
Ø After extraction, a cotton ball / gauge piece is kept over the extraction site. It should be kept there for 45 minutes to one hour with moderate pressure with the opposing teeth. This step helps to stop the bleeding and stabilize the blood clot. Dispose the cotton / gauge properly and do not check the extraction site.
Ø Do
not spit when the cotton / gauge is in your mouth and also after removing it.
Spitting will displace the clot and may produce bleeding. Also, do not gargle.
If bleeding starts again because of spitting or gargling, repeat the above
step.
Ø Do
not touch with finger or tongue at the extraction site as this can displace the
blood clot.
Ø Apply
ice pack every hour for 5 minutes each for about 7 to 8 hours. This will help
to reduce the swelling which may occur after tooth extraction.
Ø Consume
soft and cold food preferably from the opposite side of extraction. Plain
vanilla ice – cream or thick milk shake is better after one hour of extraction.
Ø Do
not smoke or consume alcohol for at least 12 hours after extraction.
Ø Avoid
eating hard foods like dry fruits, peanuts, papad etc. as they can get lodged
within the extraction socket and delay healing.
Ø If
stiches are taken, do not touch the stiches, leave them as they are until they
are removed by your dentist.
Ø Take
the medicines as advised by your dentist.
Ø Call
your dentist if you observe excessive bleeding or severe pain even after taking
painkillers.
Hoping you a fast
recovery.
