EFFECTS OF BETEL NUTS (SUPARI) AND TOBACCO ON TEETH AND MOUTH

Betel nuts and Tobacco are one of the most addictive habits amongst youngsters as well as adults. They are mainly consumed in the form of Mawa, Pan – masala, Gutkha and many more. Initially, this habit gives a kick to brain and increases alertness and cognitive behaviour but in long run, it causes dependency and numerous ill effects on our body. Let us see some of the major ill effects of betel nut and tobacco.

ON TEETH

Ø  Staining on teeth – Chewing of betel – nut or tobacco causes staining and poor appearance of teeth.

Ø  Worn out chewing surfaces of teeth – The occlusal surfaces of teeth get worn out after long term use of betel nuts.

Ø  Teeth fracture – The cusps of teeth can get fractured easily.

 ON MOUTH

Ø  Discoloration of oral mucosa – Tobacco causes increased melanosis in the mucosa which causes brown to black discoloration of the mucosa.

Ø  Tobacco induced mucosal changes – The site where tobacco is placed, gets wrinkled and white to brown in colour.

Ø  Potentially malignant lesions (lesions having high potential to convert in cancer) – Long term use of betel nut and tobacco causes white and red patches like leukoplakia, erythroplakia and many more. It may also cause oral submucous fibrosis in which the mouth opening decreases and patient is unable to eat hot and spicy foods. All these conditions have an increased risk for development of oral cancer.

Ø  Oral cancer – This is the final result of long term tobacco and betel nut usage which can be prevented easily just by quitting these habits at the right time.

Other than the effects on teeth and mouth, this habit also has severe ill – effects on the entire body like increased chances of heart and lung diseases, cancers of food pipe, lungs, intestines, prostrate, decreased fertility and many more.

As we are aware that prevention is always better than cure, so the best option is to quit these habits immediately, make a plan to deal with withdrawal symptoms and if you notice any of the above signs in your mouth, then visit your dentist so that any problem can be treated at the earliest.
