What is Root Canal Treatment ?

Many of us had suffered from toothache and were advised about root canal treatment from our dentist. Let us understand what root canal treatment is and how it is done?

Our teeth have a soft center organ called pulp which is covered by dentine and enamel. Enamel is the hardest organ of human body but the micro – organisms in the decay can dissolve the enamel surface and form cavities. Soon these micro – organisms enter the dentine and pulp.

As soon as these micro – organisms enter the pulp, they start irritating the nerves present in the pulp and causes permanent damage to the pulp and the patient suffers from pain. This pain is pulsating or throbbing in nature and it increases on taking cold, hot, sweet or sour food and beverages. Most of the times, the patient is unable to chew food from that side. Sometimes, the pain is so severe that the patient requires a pain killer to stop the pain but this helps only for some time till the effect of pain killer remains.

The permanent solution to this problem is removal of the decay and the damaged pulp and this is called root canal treatment. Your dentist will take an X – ray of the affected tooth to study the details of decay and the tooth structure. Using specialized instruments, we will remove the decay and the infected pulp. We will clean the pulp canals using different irrigating solutions and will fill these canals with an inert material called gutta-percha so that no space remains for micro - organisms.

This completes the root canal treatment. The decayed portion of the tooth is then filled with a  restorative material and if required, a cap if fabricated over the tooth.
